A filmmaker follows her partner, a leukemia survivor on his Giro d’Italia to move forward in life after experiencing trauma, but realizes she is trying to get back to something that no longer exists.

Filmmaker MAJA follows her partner BLAŽ, a leukemia survivor who embarks on an extraordinary cycling journey to heal from a traumatic experience. They go all the way from the Dolomites to the volcanoes of Etna. But what should have been the beginning of something beautiful has become a battle for their relationship. She is trying to get back to something that doesn’t exist anymore but realizes that it makes no sense because they are not the same people, they have changed. CENT’ANNI is a personal confession about the impact of the illness on a relationship and MAJA’s journey to understand who she is.

Director’s statement

I’ve been with my partner BLAŽ since I was eighteen. We grew up together so I am who I am because of being with him. Two years ago, I almost lost him to cancer. I took it as my mission to help him survive and I felt connected to him more than ever before. Few days after receiving a bone marrow transplant, he told me he wants to cycle back to where it all started, to that little town in Italy where he collapsed for the first time. I was inspired by his courage and I envisioned our trip as an opportunity to celebrate life and our love. After two years of fear and hospitals, I hoped that we’ll finally be carefree and happy. But our journey opened up old wounds I didn’t know were still inside me. I was pretending I’m okay but I lost touch with who I really am if I’m not his caretaker and partner. Being a film director was the only identity I could hold on to so I used it to look into myself and our relationship. Can we relearn how to love each other and start again as two different people?
