Adelina: Symphony of Longing and Estrangement

It is an intimate journey into the world and minds of two lost souls, mother and daughter, who have become outcasts, one in the centre of Europe and the other in a tiny village in Georgia.

SYNOPSIS

After 11 years of being locked away from the outside world by her parents, ADELINA flees Georgia to Europe in search of freedom, while her mother remains behind in their small village, struggling to cope with the aftermath of her child's transgender identity revelation that has brought drastic changes to her life. Despite the divergence of their paths, the two women's fates remain intertwined as they navigate the complexities of social exclusion, scars of the past and the tapestry of familial love.

When ADELINA shared her story, it deeply and profoundly touched me. Her raw honesty and the realisation that she spent over a decade confined at home due to society's fear shook me to the core. In 2018, we made a short film about Adelina, PRISONER OF SOCIETY (2018), that was nominated for the European Film Academy Award. The film’s success allowed us to help Adelina flee Georgia. We thought it was the end of the story and the happy one. However, in our heart-to-heart conversation with Adelina, I understood that her life took an unexpectedly dark turn and became even more complex and complicated. Immediately, I knew I had to make this film, no matter the consequences. Initially, my intention was to focus solely on Adelina's voice to orchestrate the collective experience of her feelings. But, as filming progressed, her mother's story became increasingly complex and intertwined with Adelina's. I realised we could not tell the story without her mother, as she represented the family's side of the struggle. Ultimately, ADELINA: SYMPHONY OF LONGING AND ESTRANGEMENT is a testament to the human desire to love and be loved and the sacrifices we must make to live authentically.
