When a girl she is friends with online gets seriously ill, MARUŠA moves across Europe to help her. But is her friend really sick or just suffering from the loneliness epidemic?
After losing her mother, MARUŠA (25) moves from Ljubljana to Slovenian countryside to live with her estranged father’s family. Maruša feels like an outsider at their farm – she isn’t too handy with the dairy cows, she can’t communicate with her withdrawn father and she feels like a burden staying in her little sister’s room. ALJA (28) is a Slovenian nurse working in North Germany, who suffers from an unknown disease and posts about it online.
Girls, both adrift and lonesome, meet online and form an intense bond. When Alja’s condition worsens, Maruša takes a trip across Europe to take care of her ill friend. Meeting in person puts their connection to test – Maruša suspects Alja is only pretending to be sick to get attention while her own reasons for her visit might also be far from altruistic. When Maruša confronts her friend and threatens to leave, Alja decides to take more drastic measures.

URŠA MENART (1985) graduated in Film and TV directing from University of Ljubljana Academy for Theatre, Radio, Film and Television in 2010. She directed few documentaries (WHAT ABOUT MOJCA?, THERE ONCE WAS A LAND OF HARDWORKING PEOPLE) and co-wrote two feature films; NIGHTLIFE (directed by Damjan Kozole and co-written by Kozole and Ognjen Sviličić which won Best Director Award in Karlovy Vary IFF 2016) and Half-Sister (Karlovy Vary IFF, 2019). Her debut feature as writer/director MY LAST YEAR AS A LOSER(2018) won the Slovenian national award Vesna for Best Film and Best Screenplay.

Producer and managing director of Vertigo, a Ljubljana (SI) based production company with a distinctive track record. He's a film producer with extensive working experience on international co-productions and narrow budget films. Hočevar has produced or co-produced around 45 award winning feature films, as well as more than 15 documentaries and 50 short films and TV productions. Danijel has been selected among Variety’s Ten Producers To Watch in 2001. He is a voting member of EFA and since 2011 the president of the Association of Slovenian Film Producers.

After graduating in Literature and Sociology at University in Ljubljana, Katja Lenarčič (1988) started working for Berlin based world sales company m-appeal in 2012. In 2015 she joined Slovenian production company EnaBanda, where she produced few documentary films and awarded short films. She joined production company Vertigo in 2020. She's alumna of Thessaloniki Industry Academy and Jihlava Emerging producers.

Director’s statement
EVERYTHING THAT IS WRONG WITH YOU is a dark comedy about a generation scattered across Europe and plagued by the loneliness epidemic. I am interested in exploring the differences in expectations versus reality of moving to a country with supposedly more opportunities, the feelings of displacement, invisibility and being a stranger everywhere – and contrast them to a desire to have meaningful relationships and friendships, like the ones we usually see portrayed in the media between women.
I want to present these themes with irony, humor and warmth. I like my characters to be perceptive about their surroundings but blind to their own misconceptions. The humor in the film should come from the deadpan dialogue, which plays in contrast to the melancholic visuals and the occasional gory details. I would like those juxtapositions and the two protagonist’s reactions to them to result in some unexpected turns in mood and atmosphere - sometimes turning to humor and other times to terror.

‘Everything That’s Wrong With You’, a second feature film by Slovenian director Urša Menart conveys the intense feeling of desolation and detachment intertwined in personal and relatable story. The loneliness of contemporary world that main protagonists are experiencing is universal and relevant not only for millennials who are primary audience but for wider public as well.
Director previously established herself with her award winning first feature ‘My last year as a Loser’, produced by Vertigo in 2018. Conceived as an international co-production from the start, the project is currently in development stage; it received development support from Slovenian Film Centre, MEDIA support and RE-ACT Funding which enabled thorough development life. We’re currently focused on finding the right coproducing partner in Germany and one in either France / Italy / Benelux or DK territory. We plan on apply for production funding in Fall 2021. Principal photography should start by 2022.
