Horror is other people.

It is the year of 1994 in Belgrade, capital of Yugoslavia. The country is isolated and the people are turning towards the Church. IGOR, popular TV host of an occult-themed late-night show, receives a disturbing VHS recording. The search for its author ends quickly, as the young man who appears in it is found dead in a freshly dug grave. All of the evidences points to suicide, but other terrifying details push Igor to visit the high-school the dead boy attended. That same night, another teenage girl from the same school jumps from the rooftop. Just as Igor uncovers the students’ secret underground gathering place, the body of a third boy is found hanging above the entrance. Fear among people rises, as morbid symbols of the infamous satanic cult Black Rose keep appearing on the school grounds. These events trigger an unhealed wound Igor still carries. A year prior, he was romantically involved with LIDIJA, an investigative journalist who allegedly died of suicide. Instead of letting him deal with his loss, Igor’s mother pushes him into taking care of his autistic sister. Convinced that he's about to reveal the very heart of darkness, Igor is sucked into the spiral of media manipulation. Using his late-night show he contributes to satanic panic, simultaniously leading the police to the wrong direction. The victim of their mutual hysteric investigation winds up being a group of guerilla anti-war activists, whom they unintentionally expose. The police is no closer to exposing the cult, but the surviving students, their parents and the school psychologist appear to be the key people in unmasking the true horror that is surfacing. But to uncover all the mysteries, he must face his own past.

Creator’s statement

This project is envisioned as a mystery/crime conspiracy series, with 8 episodes per season. The main character IGOR would always remains its constant, while his setting would change, as he is moves around different parts of Serbia, covering all of the 90s. It would not to be treated as a typical east European realism, but more as a suspenseful noir dream that gradually turns into reality. Every season is to start as a classical crime procedural, with bizarre and mystic undertones, that are to be deconstructed through the lens of the political and social climate of the period. By the beginning of third season the audience will realize that they were watching something that is in fact an origin story of a villain. Igor's journey of becoming mastermind state head of propaganda. Growing up in Serbia during this period is the emotional starting point for this project. As the world is discovering the danger of fake news concepts - we grew up with it. Before the age of the internet, everything was controlled through official media. The dictatorial regime of Slobodan Milošević created its own reality. Being a teenager in that period was hard. Everyone who survived that period and stayed in the country still feels the consequences and damages. Since this is a period piece, the show will be rich with visual clues that puts the audience directly in the year 1994. VHS cassettes, neon colored sweatpants, over the top haird-dressing, Zastava and Lada cars. All of these elements are there to give an odd sense of nostalgia that turns dark instead of its bright color surfaces.
