Moon Coast

After kick-starting the first open-air beach club on his idyllic remote island, MARIO, a charming and manipulative local, opens Pandora's box of greed, crime and corruption.

SYNOPSIS

Starting in 2001, the series follows the transformation of a peaceful Croatian island into a world-famous party destination. MARIO (25), a charming go-getter whose idea to see the world has failed, decides to bring the world to himself by organising wild parties at the beach restaurant where he works. He teams up with his girlfriend IVA (25), and their success starts to spread internationally. Since there is no real party without some vice, Mario becomes annoyed by the high morals of his boss VEDRAN (45). He decides to step up and marry Iva to get her father, BEMBO (55), the city’s Mayor, to invest in their open-air beach club. The world becomes their oyster. Dancers, DJs, cocktails, condoms - the money pours in, the traditional locals push back. The tide of all the vulgar problem-making tourists brings tension and tears the small community apart. But luckily for Mario, the money card wins. More clubs sprout in the sand, and sooner than later - organised drugs creep in as well. While Mario is happy to overlook and count the profits, Iva loses her ground when the drugs take Mario. Seeing the love of his life disappointed, he thinks a baby might improve things, but the baby boy separates them more. The women and the nights he can’t remember are countless. When he goes behind her back and opens the club door to the regional mafia, Iva decides it is time to go. She buys Vedran’s property and becomes Mario’s fiercest competition. With Iva’s independence, Mario is left exposed to locals, police and the mafia, which slowly takes over his club. The drugs are the least of his problems now, as his club starts losing money and reputation. Mario slowly realises his wife and child were the best thing he ever had, but it might just be too late. When he finds a dead body near his club and Iva, covered in blood, standing above it, he has a choice to make.

Although set in a fictionalised setting, our story is inspired by the real-life transformation of the once rural Island Pag in Croatia into something nowadays called the Ibiza of the Adriatic. A remote, seemingly idyllic yet impoverished Island that went from sheep herding and cheese to bikinis and ecstasy. We aim to use this isolated and unchanged island for centuries as a microcosmos for exploring the effects of transition, globalisation and tectonic shifts that struck the lives and value systems of ex-Yugoslavia citizens in the past decades. At the core, MOON COAST is a love story between MARIO - a typical Balkan young male motivated by competition, recognition and a desire to prove his manhood - and IVA - who can put his crazy ideas into motion and create something tangible. But just like she enabled Mario’s vision, once betrayed, she will also enable his downfall. The setting of our story is hyperlocal but internationally attractive. The tone is comedic, tragic, emotional, exciting, and relatable, with natural international co-production potential, just like our region.
