THE 9TH BOARDER

The body of an Austrian woman, burned alive, is found in the wild Carpathian Mountains hundreds of kilometres from where she vanished. This brutal murder brings three strangers to the Ukrainian mountains: a detective from Vienna, a local police officer, and a Polish woman searching for her brother. As the investigation unfolds, more victims appear: all burned alive, all found in the same valley, all from different countries. Now the strangers must work under the weight of the mountains and a growing international scandal to stop a horrific ritual before they become part of it.

SYNOPSIS

Whilefilming content on a wild slope in the Ukrainian Carpathian Mountains, some bloggers stumble upon a horrific discovery – the body of a woman, burned alive and buried in the snow. The victim turns out to be Elsa Wagner, an Austrian artist who disappeared seven hundred kilometres away. The impossible logistics and gruesome cruelty compel Markus, an experienced Austrian investigator, to travel to Ukraine and join the investigation led by Oles, a local cop whose methods are far from the restraint imposed by European protocols. Around the same time, Róża , a Polish professional fighter, arrives in the Carpathians insearch of her brother, who took a one-off job in Ukraine and never returned. In the local morgue, she finds only his burned remains. Róża decides to find the killer herself – unlike Markus and Oles, she has come here not for justice or punishment, but for revenge. The investigation quickly takes on an international dimension: people from eight countries have gone missing, and their bodies are all being found burned in the same valley deep in the Ukrainian Carpathians. As an international scandal begins to unfold, diplomatic pressure descends on a small mountain investigation.

Markus, Oles and Róża – three incompatible forces – try to hunt the same beast, each for their own reasons. Three vectors intersect, compete, and unpredictably push the case forward, like a three-body problem: together it’s difficult, apart – impossible. Every step they take leads to a dead end, and the mystery of illegal border crossings suddenly pushes them into a direct confrontation with local smugglers. For each of these characters, the trip into the mountains becomes more than a search for a killer – it becomes a reason to re-examine their own lives and their view of the world. Only by changing, by ceasing to be their old selves, do these threerealise that logic is useless here – and that they themselves have become random elements in someone’s bloody ritual. The only unshakable pattern: all the victims come from countries that share the Carpathian range. And it is this geographical pattern that finally reveals the killer’s blind spot – his fanatical devotion to mountains, borders, and fire. Deep in the wild Carpathians, an answer awaits  – one that will force them to ask themselves: Whose side is justice really on?

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

The 9th Border is a personal and layered statement, about the justice we have stopped believing in, about the darkness that accumulates quietly inside people and societies, and about the one border that matters more than any line drawn on a map. We live in a time of profound tension — between nations, between values, between what we believe should happen and what actually takes place. I have spent four years watching my country fight for its survival, and in that time I have observed something quieter and more corrosive than war itself: the slow erosion of belief that justice is possible. That darkness accumulates in people, in societies, in the silence between what we say and what we really feel. This is the question I want to explore – not through a political statement, but through a story about eight murders that nobody powerful enough cared about until the wrong passport turned up in the snow. This story is set in the Ukrainian Carpathians – a world rarely explored on screen. Sergei Parajanov touched it once, in Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors, and the world noticed. But the culture remained unexplored – ancient, alive, strange. For centuries, the people here have lived beyond the reach of any institution, any state, any promise of justice from outside. They have their own law, older than any constitution. They pray in church and leave offerings for forest spirits. They rely on no one but themselves and the mountains. And they believe the mountains belong to no one. Eight countries. Eight victims. A criminal case that should have remained internal becomes an international scandal – mountains don't respect borders but governments do. I want to explore that collision – how eight different histories, wounds, and definitions of justice are forced into the same conversation. What draws me to this story is the tension between the Austrian and Ukrainian at its centre – the westernmost and the easternmost – two people who have every reason not to understand each other. Because I believe concepts divide us but the fight against evil does not. I believe this story is about the one border no government can draw and no army can defend. The ninth border – the border of humanity – belongs to all of us equally. And in the world we live in today, it has never felt more fragile.
