STRINGERS
When a translator is murdered in Riga, three freelance journalists – a desperate local fixer, a broke British investigator, and a compromised US veteran – find their separate inquiries converging.
SYNOPSIS
Latvia sits on the front line between Russia and NATO, its collective psyche rubbed thin by a deep ethnic divide, a declining population, and a perpetual state of paranoia. In this grim landscape, Artis, the wealthy heir to a timber empire, does something radical – he buys a hockey team. On the ice, Latvian and Russian players pass the puck as one, proving unity is the way to score. The team soon becomes a national phenomenon, inspiring Artis to transfer that success into politics. The Kremlin, however, is having none of it. At the start of the election campaign, a translator is murdered in Riga. Three stringers unwittingly find themselves drawn into the same dangerous conspiracy. John, a young British journalist, is living off writing lifestyle pieces instead of the big investigative scoops he dreams of. After a chance encounter with the translator, he wakes to find her dead and himself a suspect in her murder. Stranded, his passport confiscated, he investigates on his own, uncovering links between the translator’s death and right-wing politicians backed by Moscow. Alina, a fixer from a Russian-Latvian family, is hired by Sarah – a wealthy media owner, and Artis’s ex-fiancée – to dig up dirt on him. She discovers that some of Artis’s backers, including members of her own family, are entangled in a Kremlin-backed human-trafficking operation. Nicholas, an aging US correspondent, is being blackmailed by Russian intelligence, as they hold his Russian wife hostage in the asylum. When he learns his next task is to praise Artis’s policies on foreign workers, he suspects a hybrid warfare operation is underway. At first, the three stringers compete, being suspicious of one another. Later, their investigations converge, forcing them to form an uneasy alliance. Piece by piece, they uncover a Kremlin plan to assassinate Artis during the hockey match and pin the murder on a migrant “terrorist cell.” The conspiracy fails, but the evidence is too weak to expose it fully. As the elections loom and secret deals surface, the three stringers are left in doubt as to whether they backed the right man.

CREATOR’S BIOGRAPHY
I am drawn to stories that emerge from the fissures where human lives intersect with the grinding plates of geopolitics. Stringers is such a story – a narrative that feels both urgently contemporary and classically tragic, and it is one I am deeply committed to bringing to the screen. My collaboration with the screenwriter Nikola Kuprešanin is now in its fifth year. It is a partnership built on a shared language of cinema and a mutual understanding of the complex, often darkly ironic, realities of our region. Our workflow is a continuous dialogue, a process of refining and focusing a story's emotional truth alongside its narrative drive. Kuprešanin’s powerful treatment for Stringers, with its richly drawn characters navigating a world of pervasive paranoia, is a testament to this fruitful creative symbiosis and the perfect foundation for this project. This story resonates with me on a profoundly personal level. Having lived through the Siege of Sarajevo, I have a visceral understanding of how a modern European country can become a pressure cooker of fear, corruption, and unexpected humanity. The Balkans and the Baltics are kindred spirits in this regard – both are regions where the euphoria of post-Cold War independence has been tempered by lingering contemporary empires, the corrosive reality of corruption, and the unsettling feeling of being a pawn in a game played by great powers. Stringers captures this exact sentiment: the crushing helplessness of the individual against vast, impersonal forces, and the incredible resilience that emerges in response. Visually and tonally, I see this series as a fusion of the chilling, mist-enshrouded atmospherics of True Detective with the intricate, multi-layered geopolitical plotting of The Night Manager. We will contrast the many faces of Riga – the sleek, cold glamour of its elite spaces and the gritty, Soviet-era texture of its underbelly – with the silent, ominous beauty of the borderland forests, which will feel both breathtaking and terrifying, much like the landscapes in ZeroDarkThirty. At its core, this is a human tragedy set against a backdrop of hybrid warfare. It is a murder mystery that unravels into a spy thriller, but its heart beats with the very real drama of the migrant crisis. Being a refugee and a migrant myself in my youth and witnessing the similar recent human tragedy in the Balkans region – which is seen in my award-winning short documentary When We Were Them – this subject is especially important to me. My approach is never to let the audience forget the human cost of geopolitical games. The camera will linger on the faces of the desperate, the conflicted, and the corrupt with the same unflinching empathy. The relevance of Stringers cannot be overstated. It is a mirror held up to the very real disinformation campaigns and weaponisation of migrants that is taking place on NATO’s borders today. At the same time, this is not a simplistic tale of good versus evil. My experience has taught me that humanity is never so binary. This story will show the good and the bad on all sides – the compromised US correspondent, the noble Russian veteran, the Latvian nationalist seeking redemption. The ultimate message is one of necessary unity: that in the face of calculated division, our only hope is to find common humanity. This is a story that requires a delicate hand to balance its thriller elements with its profound human drama. It is a challenge I feel my entire career has prepared me for. I am eager to guide this exceptional project from page to screen, to build a world that is both terrifyingly real and compellingly cinematic, and to tell a story that matters.

PRODUCER’S STATEMENT
Stringers is our first dive into television series at the international level, and we are very happy to have on board Nikola Kuprešanin, the most impressive writer in the region, and Danis Tanović, the director whose No Man's Land won an Academy Award in 2002. Their most recent collaboration – the series Kotlina (Hollow) won six Hearts of Sarajevo in the series category at the Sarajevo Film Festival and was successfully distributed at all regional television stations. Kuprešanin’s first-hand experience as a war reporter and stringer is precious in his writing. We were happy to connect him with Latvian director and producer Ieva Ūbele, whose resourcefulness is the key element in our collaboration with Latvia. With her long-standing experience with social documentaries and deep insight into Baltic politics and the specifics of collective identity, she adds invaluable information in support of Kuprešanin’s writing, while also ensuring a female angle on the entire story. As a company, we have worked in the series world, serving as local service co-producers in Croatia. With this project, our ambition is to take on a lead role in an international co-production and to elevate the series to a truly international level, which we believe its story deserves. In terms of co-production, we are looking into exploring a collaboration with Latvia, where the series is set, a country with very strong cinematic traditions and recently internationally recognised series ( Soviet Jeans by Stanislavs Tokalovs, for example, which won the Best Actor and Audience Awards at Series Mania in 2024). Furthermore, we are eyeing collaboration with Norway, a country experiencing a golden age of TV drama over the last decade and boasting internationally recognised titles including Occupied and State of Happiness. Geopolitics as subject matter provides a rich source of drama, conflict, and human stories, and allows our creative team to blend thriller, political-drama, and documentary styles, thus appealing to both mainstream and niche audiences. We have considered several locations for the series and decided to go for a potential next hotspot, placing the series on an external border of the NATO nations. We believe audiences will be drawn to Stringers as a series that reflects on and interprets both political and social realities. We feel this project positions Nukleus film within a high-demand niche that combines both entertainment and relevance.
Production company profile
Established in 2004, Nukleus film is a Croatian production company. Nukleus began as a company dedicated to producing socially engaged and courageous documentary films, and that ethos continues to shape its approach to all its projects, as it consistently seeks strong voices, challenging subjects, and daring storytelling approaches. The year 2015 marked a new period in the company’s development. By co-producing and providing services for David Verbeek’s Full Contact, Nukleus entered the field of fiction-film production.
