MOON 66 QUESTIONS

Jacqueline Lentzou

BLONDE (Greece), LUXBOX (France), fiction

Artemis questions the very concept of knowing someone, when she is called to take care of a father whom she does not really know, while he suffers from a disease whose real cause is unknown.

ARTEMIS, an only-child of divorced parents, has not come back home for four years and would not have done so, hadn’t been for a valid reason. Paris, the firstborn of a conservative family has stopped walking, talking, and working. He is her father. His health collapse becomes the reason for her return. Living in the same house after a lifetime of distance, Artemis transforms from a caretaker to a loving daughter, trying to learn more about Paris

Jacqueline (Athens, 1989) is a writer/director whose cinematic language involves finding poetry in seemingly mundane premises and/or creating visual poetry through word and image association. She experiments with formats, durations and feelings. She is a London Film School graduate (Distinction, 2013), a Berlinale Talents alumna (2015, 2019), a Locarno Film Academy alumna (2017), a Torino Film Lab alumna (2017) and a Sundance Screenwriting Lab alumna (2018) among others.

Thematically, her films revolve around the same topics her writings focus on: unconventional family constructs, love (and the lack of it), loneliness and belonging, as well as the dream. She has directed four shorts which have screened and won in numerous festivals (Berlin Locarno, Toronto, Cannes, New Directors/New Films) the most prestigious one being the Cine Leica Discovery Award in Cannes’ Semaine De La Critique (2018) for HECTOR MALOT: THE LAST DAY OF THE YEAR.

Retrospectives on her full body of work have taken place in Montreal, Vienna, Trondheim. Currently, she is finalizing her feature debut MOON:66 QUESTIONS while her most recent short THE END OF SUFFERING (A proposal) is due to premier in Locarno Film Festival 2020.

Director’s statement

My childhood was unconventional, with everything that word means and entails. In order to survive, I learned to embrace the concept of absurdity in a family. Only in this inhospitable place could I find any kind of stability. Only in this way did the numerous questions that overwhelmed me from time to time tend to meet with an answer. These awkward and unassailable questions have also served as the limitless source of everything I have written and created to date.

MOON, 66 QUESTIONS – a work structured around the elements mentioned above, that is: the absurdity of family, and the process of questioning – began as an attempt for me to comprehend the depths of my role as my father’s daughter, and hence to understand him too. After working through this nexus of facts, emotions and dynamics for quite some time, the work transformed into a study of love. And more specifically, of paternal love.
