In Conversation with Mila Turajlić

Drawing inspiration from her latest documentary diptych, SCENES FROM THE LABUDOVIĆ REELS: NON-ALIGNED AND CINÉ-GUERRILLAS (2022), the Talents Sarajevo session featuring Mila Turajlić will delve into the intricacies of the creative process behind the film, with a particular focus on the significant role of archival research in her work. As part of the talk, attendees will have the privilege of an exclusive screening of the author's captivating video piece titled Screen/Solidarity/Silence – Debris from the Labudović Reels.

Mila Turajlić

Mila Turajlić is a filmmaker, visual artist, and archive scholar whose documentary works skillfully blend oral histories, documentary archives, fiction films, and found footage. Through her unique approach, she aims to rekindle forgotten histories at the politically charged intersection of personal and collective narratives. Her documentary THE OTHER SIDE OF EVERYTHING (2017) won 32 awards including the prestigious IDFA Award for Best Documentary Film. It was nominated for the European Parliament’s LUX Prize. Mila’s previous film, CINEMA KOMUNISTO (2010) premiered at Tribeca and won 16 awards including the FOCAL Award for Creative Use of Archival Footage. In 2018 she was commissioned by MoMA to create archive-based video installations for their landmark exhibition on Yugoslav architecture. In 2020 Mila was a Chicken&Egg Award grantee and invited to join the AMPAS Documentary Branch.

Petra Meterc

Petra Meterc is a film critic and radio journalist based in Slovenia. In the past, she reported on film and literature for one of the oldest independent radio stations in region, Radio Študent. She now publishes in Ekran magazine for film and television and KINO! magazine, and works for the Third Programme of Slovene national radio – ARS. She is a programmer of Festival of migrant film, helps to programme Kino Otok – Cinema Isola and also works with festivals Animateka and Kurja polt. She often gives lectures on cinema or mentors film criticism workshops and is herself a Sarajevo Talent Press and Berlinale Talent Press alumna. She is also active in the Slovene film critics’ association.
