DANIEL BOLDA (1983) was born in Berlin, Germany, and grew up in Athens, Greece. He studied film in Denmark. He worked as an assistant director, casting director in shorts and feature films. He directed his first short film, MUFFIN (2017) and WHEN I SMILE MY EYES CLOSE (2020), which premiered at Cork International Film Festival. MALDIVES is his debut feature film.

MALDIVES is a folk-fantasy existential tale of an isolated character living in the mountains with his sole friend, his dog. The film is an allegory about the fears that grow inside us and stop us from seeing what is really there and the fears that can be born from the denial itself. There is an underlying connection to blaming what is around us, often idolising escape as the solution to our miseries. I wanted MALDIVES to be a hybrid of realism and fantasy, merging elements of both, with the binding factor at its core remaining the fundamental notion of human tenderness and affection, expressed genuinely and unbiasedly.
