AGATHA CANDY

In a society in which her people never join the police and often clash with it, Luminița-a half-Roma criminal investigator-struggles to solve the case of a teenage girl who was left for dead in the woods, all the while being pulled into a mysterious world of occult practices and deep-rooted corruption.

SYNOPSIS

Luminița Florea, a thirty-four-year-old deputy police commissioner from a modest, half-Roma background, has just moved to a quiet town in Transylvania. Her first major case pairs her with seasoned prosecutor Iulian Sabo to investigate a mysterious incident involving Agatha, a teenage girl found unconscious in the forest near the hunting lodge of her German teacher, Adrian Fischer. Adrian, who seemed to have a disturbingly close—perhaps even romantic—relationship with Agatha, becomes the prime suspect. But when the girl dies, Luminița’s focus shifts to two other students: Eva, Adrian’s daughter, and her friend Beatris. Eva has no solid alibi, and Beatris drives a car matching the one seen fleeing the scene that night. As the investigation deepens, so does the connection between Luminița and Iulian. What begins as an intense, ethically ambiguous affair shows signs it could become something more serious—but with Iulian’s imminent move to Bucharest, the prospect of a lasting relationship becomes uncertain. Meanwhile, the case grows darker and stranger: Beatris, whose family is entangled with the local underworld, is discovered to be trafficking human corpses—buying bodies from poor villagers under the pretense of medical research. Since the girl proves impossible to reach—dodging calls, evading meetings, and always one step ahead—Luminița turns to Beatris’s mother—a wealthy, enigmatic Roma fortune-teller and reputed witch—who subtly warns her to stop digging. But after Luminița’s own father is brutally attacked, she realises she has stumbled into something far more sinister than she imagined.

Andrei Tănase

After graduating from the National Film School of Bucharest (UNATC), Andrei Tănase worked as a writer-director for a few television shows, then focused on his personal film projects. FIRST NIGHT (2016) was selected for the Venice Film Festival short competition and received several awards around the world. In 2023 he completed his feature-length directorial debut, DAY OF THE TIGER, which premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam.

Since I love mystery and suspense, but also tough, challenging—often taboo—topics, I find auteur thrillers to be some of the most stimulating films to watch. They blend intellectual depth with emotional intensity, graciously balance rule-following with rule-breaking, hence offering the best of both worlds: gripping entertainment alongside thought-provoking substance. The genre has given us many masterpieces over the years, proving that socio-moral reflection and complex themes can perfectly coexist with a tense, compelling narrative. Romanian cinema has rarely dared to explore this territory, and AGATHA CANDY offers an uncompromising response to this state of affairs: an intense psychological thriller centred on a unique protagonist, blending the structural refinement of CHINATOWN with the raw authenticity of the Romanian New Wave, all wrapped in a distinctive visual style that recalls ANGEL HEART, BLUE VELVET, or LONGLEGS.

PRODUCER’S STATEMENT

Following our previous collaboration with Andrei Tănase on his debut feature TIGRU (2023), which began development in 2018, we are continuing our partnership out of trust in his directorial vision and his ability to tackle complex themes in an engaging and thought-provoking manner. AGATHA CANDY masterfully blends social themes and moral dilemmas with the tension of a modern thriller. The motivation for producing the film stems from a strong desire to bring underrepresented genres—such as thriller and horror—to the forefront of Romanian cinema, integrating them into an auteur-driven film that has the potential to position Romanian filmmaking more prominently on the international stage. We firmly believe that AGATHA CANDY has significant potential to captivate international audiences while contributing meaningfully to the diversification of genres explored in Romanian cinema.
