LOVE-45
GUEST PROJECT / In partnership with Doha Film Institute
Walid, an overweight Lebanese man, is caught up in a destructive spiral. He is sent away to build a tennis court in the Beqaa Valley. His encounters with Laith and Maya lead him to find the path back towards hope.
SYNOPSIS
Walid, an overweight Lebanese man, has been caught in a destructive spiral since he was a teenager. Despite his brilliant and educated mind, he is alone and unhappy. In Beirut, Walid is the handyman at his uncle's very posh tennis club. They regularly clash because of the grumpy attitude Walid adopts in all circumstances. Maya, a French aid worker, arrives at the club to ask for help. In the Syrian refugee camp she supervises in the Beqaa Valley, she wants to build a tennis court and train the children there to help them overcome their war trauma. Walid's uncle sees this as the perfect opportunity to send him away from the condemning looks of the club’s bourgeois clientele. Despite his reluctance, Walid has little choice and must resolve to take the road towards the camp. His comings and goings between Beirut and the Beqaa intensify, giving rise to a variety of encounters that encourage him to surpass himself. A caring confrontation with a psychologist, an unexpected budding love with Maya, and the bonds he forms with a young Syrian refugee very much affected by the war gradually lead Walid to confront his own trauma and, finally, to reconnect with himself.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
Nourished by my personal experiences, my love for tennis, and my complicated relationship with food, this film questions the viewer about the aftermath of conflict. What has been going on in the Middle East over the past several years demonstrates a new cycle of violence. Behind the broken buildings, there are so many broken lives. I want to explore all that tennis symbolises as a sport of self-reflection and introspection that can bring one out of the shadows. LOVE–45 is a story of encounters and attempts at healing amid societies that are being torn apart.
