GORILLA
In the decadent world of 1960s Paris, a French movie star and his Yugoslav bodyguard's powerful brotherhood shatters when a Hollywood murder threatens to destroy them both.
SYNOPSIS
Inspired by sensational true crimes of the 1960s, GORILLA weaves a dark tale of loyalty and betrayal in the decadent world of French cinema. When Ivan Živanović, a loyal Yugoslav strongman, becomes the bodyguard to Richard Després, France's most beloved movie star, a chance encounter in Belgrade sets in motion a story that will haunt them both for decades. Though worlds apart—Ivan is an orphaned outsider fighting for belonging, while Richard is a sophisticated actor concealing his inner fragility—the two forge a powerful brotherhood that transcends their employer-employee relationship. As their story unfolds from the gritty streets of Belgrade to the glamorous realm of French cinema, their bond is tested by a web of dangerous relationships: Richard's rebellious wife, Nicole; corrupt producers; Corsican mobsters; and Ivan's childhood friend, Vuk, whose ambitious schemes lead to fatal consequences. Against the backdrop of a changing society, where high-society orgies intersect with political scandals and a Hollywood murder casts a long shadow, Ivan and Richard must navigate an increasingly treacherous path between loyalty and survival. Framed through elderly Richard's confession to a young ghostwriter, GORILLA explores a tale of crime and betrayal, as well as a meditation on guilt, redemption, and the devastating price of belonging in a world built on illusions.

CREATOR’S STATEMENT
In crafting GORILLA, we explore how power, privilege, and the allure of glamour can corrupt even the purest bonds between people. By setting our story in the deceptively glittering world of 1960s French cinema, we illuminate issues plaguing our society today—the exploitation inherent in the entertainment industry, the commodification of human relationships, and the crushing weight of capitalism on authentic human connection. Through Ivan's journey from outsider to “gorilla,” we witness how the machinery of show business and high society can take something as genuine as loyalty and twist it so it can be used as a weapon. His story resonates particularly well today as we grapple with questions of belonging, immigration, and the price of assimilation into societies that fundamentally view outsiders as disposable. The series explores how systems of power—studios, political institutions, social hierarchies—tend to corrupt those who try to rise in their ranks, often destroying the qualities that made those individuals special in the first place. While the series is set in the sexually liberated 1960s, it deliberately echoes contemporary conversations about power dynamics and exploitation in the entertainment industry. The high-society orgies, the casual misogyny, the treatment of women as a commodity to be traded—these elements aren't merely historical colour but rather a mirror reflecting patterns of behaviour that the #MeToo movement has brought to light. Richard's complex relationship with his own sexuality and power, masked behind a carefully constructed image, speaks to ongoing discussions about toxic masculinity and its cost to both the perpetrators and their victims. By framing our story through the memories of an elderly Richard Després, we examine how time has changed our understanding of what was once considered acceptable behaviour.

PRODUCER’S STATEMENT
When I heard that the Gorila book rights were available, I rushed to secure them. The story is so compelling. It has been vibrating as a top-notch, real-event based story since the 1980s in the region of what was then Yugoslavia. The story of a petty thug, a movie star, political secrets, and love affairs—all mixed against the backdrop of 1970s Paris and sprinkled with a Serbian touch—still has a very strong flavour. On top of that—one of the main characters being the globally celebrated star Alain Delon—we are bound to be stuck with the story for a long time. Development started early in 2022, but with the death of Delon, this story is even more interesting to many who would like to have a sneak peak into the lives of the hottest people in Europe at the time. I hope this narrative and the way the storytelling evolves will attract a broad audience.
