I have always been deeply captivated by teen stories. Adolescence is a unique world where emotions are magnified and the search for identity is both beautiful and brutal. Chasing the Clouds is based on two remarkable young adult novels: the award-winning Chasing the Clouds (originally published as Oblak čvoraka) and The Dragons That Couldn't Fly. I was profoundly drawn to the incredibly honest, raw depictions of growing up in both of these books. With immense empathy and understanding, they tackle the heavy themes of bullying, depression, addiction, and loneliness in adolescents. During our extensive field research, we learned a devastating truth that echoes these very pages: today’s teens shared that they do not feel seen, heard, or understood. Their raw honesty and hidden heartbreaks became the emotional fuel for this project. This series is designed to plunge the audience directly into the teenage state of mind, capturing a turbulent landscape of paranoia, guilt, and profound loneliness. Rejecting a traditional whodunit mystery setup, my creative approach embraces a highly stylised, non-linear structure to mirror the fragmented psychology of trauma. By jumping back and forth in time, the direction contrasts the carefree, vibrant moments leading up to the tragedy against the cold, suffocating atmosphere of the aftermath. Visually and structurally, the spinning bottle serves as the primary cinematic engine. The bottle is not just a game; it is an active force of fate that dictates the entire narrative layout. With the spinning bottle, we create a hypnotic, rhythmic transition at the start of each episode. It serves as a visual catalyst that physically lands on a character and unlocks their subjective perspective. We use this specific visual element to build intense, claustrophobic suspense, transforming an ordinary teenage party object into a symbol of impending doom and ticking time. The physical rotation of the bottle mirrors the swirling confusion and dizzying paranoia of the characters, visually trapping the audience inside the game’s fatal momentum. Additionally, the group dynamic will be visually represented by the motif of starlings, drawing directly from the book’s original title, Oblak čvoraka, whose literal translation is “a cloud of starlings.” In nature, starlings move in perfect, mesmerising unison, serving as the ultimate metaphor for the instinct to belong. Here, we track the devastating reverse: a group of six friends who once flew as one is slowly and painfully fracturing under the weight of a desperate cover-up. Can they stick together no matter what? Chasing the Clouds is a haunting exploration of the invisible, lasting scars we leave on each other, and a cinematic reminder of what happens when the world forgets to listen. In recent years, acclaimed series like Skam, Adolescence and the immensely popular 13 Reasons Why have demonstrated a powerful global appetite for honest, emotionally raw storytelling about the complex world of teenagers. Streaming platforms have proven to be the ideal home for these narratives, offering the accessibility and intimacy demanded by a generation that consumes content primarily online. Chasing the Clouds taps directly into this massive contemporary energy and cultural relevance, delivering a universally resonant drama that refuses to shy away from hard truths.
