The themes that Assel Aushakimova explores in her films address pressing social issues that inflict both direct and indirect trauma on individuals and society as a whole. I have been deeply moved by her courage and determination to speak openly about issues that many people in Kazakhstan are still afraid to discuss. Pay the Bill exposes a number of social problems that have emerged as a result of institutional and societal indifference. A high level of sexism, insufficient protection provided by state institutions, and the inaction of law enforcement authorities continue to contribute to the growing number of victims of domestic violence in the country. At its core, the film is not only the story of one family's tragedy, but also an exploration of how indifference transforms society from a silent witness into an accomplice to the violence taking place around it. The project is currently in post-production. We are open to various forms of international collaboration that will help us complete the film and ensure a successful festival launch and international distribution. The project has already received recognition at leading international industry platforms, including the Asian Project Market at the Busan International Film Festival, the Central Asian Co-production Workshop during the Cannes Film Festival, and the Alternativa Development Lab. It also received the top award at the CAF Pitch of the Bishkek International Film Festival. Given its themes of patriarchy, the status of women, and femicide, as well as the story it tells, I believe the film will resonate with both international and Kazakhstani audiences. We hope Pay the Bill will become not only a powerful artistic statement but also a catalyst for public discussion about issues that can no longer be ignored.
