RAIN COUNTRY
In early 2000s Istanbul, high school senior Gül's secret is exposed after her classmate’s suicide, turning her life upside down. Gül embarks on a journey to find her inner strength for independence and growth.
SYNOPSIS
Set in Istanbul in 2002, RAIN COUNTRY is a young woman’s story of guilt, desire and shame, in a world where emotions are expected to remain quiet. Seventeen-year-old Gül, a quiet senior at a private high school, is shaken by the suicide of her classmate Yasemin. What no one knows is that Gül had been secretly involved with Yasemin’s boyfriend, Can. Consumed by guilt, she distances herself from her best friend Melis and watches in silence as gossip, blame, and tension grow at school. When the police catch her with Can in a park, Gül is grounded by her parents. Confined to her home, she studies for the national university exams under growing pressure. Her only solace is her grandmother, who suffers from dementia. Their fragile bond becomes a quiet refuge in an increasingly cold world. At school, grief quickly gives way to academic stress. When her classmates plan a graduation party, Gül secretly decides to attend. That night, she arrives at the villa in heavy rain, trying to feel like she belongs. But when Can shows up, the atmosphere shifts. Tension erupts when Yasemin’s best friend İrem exposes Gül’s secret, slaps her, and turns the whole class against her. Even Melis walks away. Gül is left alone in the storm, humiliated. Then, the same police officer who once harassed her arrives to shut down the party. This time, Gül pushes back. Later that night, she and İrem speak openly. They don’t forgive each other, but they recognise each other’s pain. In a dreamlike moment, Gül jumps into the Bosporus not to die, but to swim. At dawn, she wakes in a world still uncertain. The rain keeps pouring. Gül runs into the storm; toward something new, toward herself.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
RAIN COUNTRY is a coming-of-age story set in Istanbul in 2002, just before the political shift that shaped today’s Turkey. It follows Gül, a seventeen-year-old girl dealing with the loss of her classmate, a secret relationship, and the weight of growing up in a world that doesn’t leave space for her desires. It’s about the struggles of being young; feeling stuck between hope, despair, silence, and rebellion. I was Gül’s age at the time. I remember the same pressure to keep everything in. Growing up felt full of dreams, but also came with the challenges of womanhood and finding out who you are. With RAIN COUNTRY, I’m not trying to look back with nostalgia. I want to show how growing up can be painful and lonely, but also how small moments of honesty, friendship, and self-trust can offer hope. Gül’s story is quiet but strong. She doesn’t fight loudly but refuses to become someone she’s not. Her journey through guilt and awakening mirrors what young women still experience today. She wants to feel, to love, to be seen, but the world around her tells her to stay silent, to feel shame. She chooses otherwise. Visually, the film will blend realism with a poetic tone. I’ll work with different formats to reflect memory and mood and capture the atmosphere of early 2000s Istanbul. The rain is more than weather; it’s a symbol of release, collapse, and renewal. This is a personal story, but I hope it speaks to something bigger: how it feels to grow up when no one really hears you. RAIN COUNTRY is about that space between holding it all in and finally letting go.

PRODUCER’S STATEMENT
“Rain Country” tells a quiet yet powerful story of a teenage girl navigating grief, guilt, and self-discovery in early 2000s Istanbul. Its emotional world is one I know and I still carry the silence and pressure of that era. This project feels both urgent and necessary, speaking to generations of young women shaped by patriarchal environments. Zeynep Köprülü has long explored themes of growing up. Her first feature, “On the Water Surface” (2024), affirmed her ability to craft intimate, emotionally rich cinema. Having collaborated with her since her early work, I believe “Rain Country” will further refine her voice and deepen her connection with audiences. Due to its sensitive subject, the film may face challenges with national funding. We plan to secure financing through private investment, international funds, and co-productions. We’re currently seeking international partners and sales agents who share the film’s vision. The shoot is planned for spring 2027 in Istanbul, with a minimal crew and a festival premiere is targeted for winter 2028.
