The Taste of Apples is Red

Ehab Tarabieh

Anemos Productions, The Match Factory (IL, DE), fiction

Sheikh KAMEL hasn’t seen his brother for 50 years, until one cold night he arrives and trouble comes with him.

As a Sheikh in the Druze community, KAMEL is in charge of everything from managing the everyday life under military occupation to monitoring the reincarnation of lost souls from the community. When MUSTAFA arrives, DAUD, the Syrian Regime Representative in the Village doesn’t confront the Sheikh directly, but he hints and begins to apply pressure from all sides to coerce Sheikh Kamel into handing over his brother- a rebel. As the pressure amounts, Mustafa's wounds heal and Kamel must decide, but it's a lose/lose situation for him. When the situation gets too complex to handle, Mustafa takes the initiative and goes to solve a 50-year-old tab left open with Daud, reconciliating his own issues and saving his brother Kamel, that couldn’t turn against his brother.

Manager of the Btzelem Video Project in the past decade. Director of award-winning short films, including a nomination for European Academy Award in 2016.

Director’s statement:

My grandfather was never a man of religion. Grandpa had a regular speech he'd give me every time I came by, since I remember myself in my earliest memories, it went like this: Even though the village is small, it has more secrets than the mountains themselves could carry. We are cowards. We know everything, but refuse to If you ever try to unbalance the scale, to put the truth on one end and expose everything we’ve been hiding for all of these years- we will try with all our might to stop you, even by taking your life. More men will come doing the same thing, and because we are cowards, we will treat them the same. THE TASTE OF APPLES IS RED tells a story from our current times, the times we, the Arabs, are going through right now. It’s about a particular time, in which we do not want to expose our secrets because we are still cowards, or at least we believe so. Secrets that we are so afraid to deal with, and that are no different than any other secrets of any other people.

Looking for at CineLink?

We'll finish the offline editing in September and need to start music, sound design and some minor VFX. Due to hardships of producing with an elderly cast in the winter during covid, we have a very lean budget after principle shooting and we're looking for post-production funds to be able to finish the film this year.
